Mysterious smoke

Mysterious smoke over large parts of the country

What is it and where does it come from?

Mysterious smoke has settled like a blanket over large parts of Norway in recent days

There has been a lot of discussion back and forth about what the “yellow fog” comes from, what it is and how it has been lying around for so long. Now it turns out that it is forest fires in eastern Ukraine, as well as Russian areas, just across the border from Ukraine that are the main cause. In addition to these areas, there are also extensive fires in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan where the smoke comes here to Norway.

The reason why the smoke comes here is as simple as the wind direction leading it here. It is blowing southeast for us Norwegians, which means that the wind comes from areas in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The smoke thus travels over a long distance. In comparison, earlier this year we saw smoke from California, USA in Norway. Ukraine will be considered a neighbor in relations.

However, the smoke will not remain in Norway. The reason why it has taken some time before it has disappeared in some places is that there has been “new smoke” from Ukraine.

In parts of Russia where it is now burning, to where the smoke comes here – weather forecasts have been sent out at the orange level, which is the second highest to the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, or Гидрометцентр России in Russian, if you will.

But anyway, now the “forecasts” show that the wind direction will probably change a little, so we here in Norway may not notice as much of the smoke in the days ahead. The forest fires in Ukraine, Russia and Central Asia, on the other hand, seem to be continuing.
